The City of Washington will open up a license plate agency at the corner of Market and Second Street in February of 2021. Every resident of Beaufort County has long awaited this because the old office closed in June of 2019, making it very challenging to transfer a title or renew your registration.
The local office’s prior operator retired, leaving residents in Washington without any option other than traveling to other locations in Greenville, Williamston, or New Bern. This closure has been an incredible inconvenience to many in the Beaufort County area. The City of Washington decided to seek the contract to operate the location to ensure that Washington would have an option. Still, the Covid-19 pandemic delayed training the staff and ultimately opening the site.
In North Carolina, license plate agencies are run separately from DMV offices. Services that are usually available at an NC license plate agency are:

- Vehicle registration
- Notary
